Skiing in Arizona sounds like a joke until you're standing on top of Snowbowl looking across the desert. I've taught ski biking there, and it's one of my favorite surprises in the sport. The actual vertical is legit and the snow quality up high is surprisingly great.
Sun, altitude and green chile in everything. The Southwest is the most underrated ski bike region in the country, and the resorts are easygoing about bikes.
Arizona
-
Arizona Snowbowl (Flagstaff). Check in at ski school for an inspection first. No terrain park, and the bike counts as a person on the lift. ASA reports the resort rents only SNO-GOs.
-
Sunrise Park Resort. A ski bike lesson or safety checkout at ski school comes before your first chair. On-site rentals are available.
-
Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley (Tucson). Listed as three-ski friendly. Skiing an hour from saguaros never gets old.
Rentals in Arizona
-
Aspen Sports Flagstaff. A Type I snowbike with foot skis at $45 a day, for Snowbowl and Sunrise.

Rentals in New Mexico
-
Angel Fire Ski Bikes (inside the Eagle Nest Marina). SkiByk bikes at $85 and $95, and SNO-GOs at $125. It's one of the few counters anywhere where you can try both side by side.
-
Sitzmark Sports & Lodge (Red River). SNO-GO rentals for Red River and Taos, delivered to your lodging with three days' notice.
Not sure which to try at Angel Fire? Three-ski is the first-timer's bike. Type II suits riders who prefer a full-suspension mountain bike and a challenge. Compare the types here.
Après and Where to Crash
-
Rathskeller at Hotel St. Bernard (Taos Ski Valley). The lively, long-loved favorite.
-
The Bavarian (Taos Ski Valley). Up in the Kachina Basin, with giant steins, pretzels, and lederhosen-clad servers.
-
Red River Brewing Company & Distillery. Twelve rotating taps and house-made root beer.
-
Second Street Brewery (Santa Fe). For Sandia or Pajarito days with a night in town.
-
The Blake (Taos Ski Valley). Slopeside, with a spa. It feels like Austria.
-
Three Bears Lodge (Red River). Ski-to-door and friendly.
Local tip: order anything "Christmas style," with red and green chile.
